WHAT IS MALISENSE?
Malisense is a video game developed at the UCSC game dev club Game Design & Art Collaboration. The game is a top-down 2D dungeon crawler in which the player completes puzzle & stealth-based levels, interspersed with visual novel-esque segments.
RESPONSIBILITIES AS A DESIGNER & ART DIRECTOR
Core mechanics and art style of the game were developed by myself and the other 2 game leads during the pitching process.
Maintaining creative direction involved writing and reviewing documentation for game systems, UI, and art direction along with writing constructive feedback on assets developed by members.
Attended various department meetings and production team meetings, which allowed for cross-departmental discussion/coordination for any challenges in development
Quantitative details such as the number of levels, characters/enemies, etc. were outlined in the pitch and adjusted when needed throughout production for game scoping.
CHALLENGES
Making documentation as accessible as possible in order to maximize member awareness of relevant cross-departmental information was a primary concern in production.
The scope of the game was ultimately cut down in order to iterate on existing game content. In particular, one dungeon floor was cut in order to allow design to focus on refining the existing two floor layouts.
