USER EXPERIENCE PROBLEM
Lamplight is an adventure game in which the player must solve puzzles by evaluating character dialogue and visual environmental details in order to further unravel the game's muder mystery.
The overall goal of Lamplight's user experience design is defined as a tactile, diegetic experience that immerses the player in the game's moody atmosphere.
Because gameplay entails the player repeatedly accessing information found across various environments in the game, we decided to create a responsive user interface where the player can access and engage with character dialogue and environment snapshots.
RESEARCH
In September, the Lamplight team held playtests during the Santa Cruz Indie Game Showcase, a public games showcase held in downtown Santa Cruz.
Statistics collected from users include their most frequently played video game genres and their experience playing adventure-puzzle games.
User insights included:
Players’ first attempts to interact with the game was often based on the assumption of fully point-and-click controls for movement and interacting with characters.
Players tend to evaluate clues/key phrases as they appear, rather than waiting until they exhaust all dialogue.
Players sometimes had a difficult time spotting dark UI elements that are superimposed directly against the environment.
While designing Lamplight’s GUI, I examined computer games Inscryption and Papers, Please as examples of successful UI that clearly conveys necessary information that feels immersive and in tune with the game’s intended atmosphere.
These games present information on diegetic documents, paper, etc. and a strong sense of space in interactivity that ultimately served as reference for Lamplight’s UI prototypes.
Lamplight builds on and adds an additional layer of complexity in the form of its interactive aspects: the player chooses how to mark/annotate dialogue records and what parts of the crime scene are photographed.
